Yellow Earth Academy, which has held an acting course in Birmingham for the past two years, is to offer a free introductory online course in writing for live performance.

The Writers’ Academy is a beginners’ course for writers based in the Midlands. It is specifically aimed at writers of East Asian and Southeast Asian descent.

Yellow Earth Theatre was formed in 1995 by five British East Asian actors: Kwong Loke, Kumiko Mendl, Veronica Needa, David KS Tse and Tom Wu.

The course, delivered by Yellow Earth in partnership with Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Birmingham REP, will start on Wednesday 6 May from 7 until 8PM and will run each Wednesday until 3 June.

Applications can be downloaded at the Yellow Earth web site and should be returned by Wednesday 29 April.

The company’s next programme for professional writers of East Asian descent will start in May 2020. Yellow Earth’s previous scheme, which began in January 2017, involved four writers who were in the early stages of their career being selected, with the aim of developing four new plays for the company to produce.

The programme culminated with staged readings of the plays at Soho Theatre in March 2019.
