Chilworth schoolchildren have had an interactive school workshop exploring the mills of the Tillingbourne valley as part of an education programme from the Surrey Hills Society with Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.

The children took part in a puppetry workshop creating characters who lived and worked in the local mills and "becoming" the workers, learning about working conditions and recreating "a day in the life".

On Monday 4 July, the theatre's education team will assist year 5 pupils as they present an assembly to the rest of the school on three millers: John Lambert, Job Durbridge and Charles Ball.

Tillingbourne Tales is a Heritage Lottery funded project focusing on the industrial heritage of the Tillingbourne Valley, encouraging the villages along the valley to research and record their histories.

A September pageant is planned for the end of the project to bring together the stories that have emerged.
