Exit Stage Left

Ecco Theatre Company
Greenside

The cast of this play within the play being staged is about a husband and wife, actors, who, on a drunken drive home, end up hitting an 11-year-old girl. The director doesn’t seem to be able to pull the cast together to make it work. There is a lot of gossiping and backstabbing and production problems which has nothing to do with the plot. Flashback to the accident helps us understand.

But not much. The script is too convoluted, the director has fallen into every bad trap, there is just too much “acting” going on. This never rises above the very amateurish quality of school or regional theatre productions. A woman in the audience in a voice that even she was surprised was so loud said, “this is just bad”. I’m guessing that the actor did not hear it.

There were two performers who showed potential. I leave it to the individuals in the cast to claim this tossed crumb. I wanted to like it, I really did.
