The Sound of the Space Between

Grief is perhaps the human condition which artists try their utmost to explore. More than any other emotional state, it’s one that is born from confusion; it's intrinsically linked with love as well as loss, a frantic need to make sense of the world in disarray.

Harri Pitches's debut solo piece is an elegy of aural sorcery. Using a simple series of looper and reverb pedals, along with a couple of torches and a guitar, he weaves a series of soundscapes through foley, breathing and vocalisations then explores them in an abstracted journey through memories and places that tie him to the people he has lost.

It’s a beautiful mixture of storytelling and physical theatre, as he spins and darts around the space. Pitches positively vibrates with effort as he keens into the microphone, layering depths of vocalisations again and again with a confident artistry that is mesmerising.

The piece itself is at times somewhat opaque and takes itself a little time to get set in the audience’s mind. Once it has, however, it’s a beautiful evocation of love and loss and marks out a bold new performer on the Edinburgh stage.
