Thrown

Thrown follows a group of highly motivated women who come together to play in and perhaps win the Highland Games. Initially, they are a group well mixed, excited to be involved. But the flaws in each of the women and in their relationship become the crack that could cost them the competition. But outside is the unifier: they will come together for the competition. Inside, their relationships are flawed and fractured and threaten their success.

Pam (played staunchly by Lesley Hart) has health issues that will overtake her and leave her unable to participate. She has a choice. She is torn between her life here as an athlete and her need to make a life outside. Helen (Maureen Carr), the mother figure, will stealthily take control of the problem. She will be the one who keeps things on tract and moving forward.

The real tension erupts from the remaining three. Longtime friends Chantelle (Chloe-Ann Tylor) and Jo (Adiza Shardow) have joined this team together. The aggressive and controlling Imogen (Efé Agwele) will become the wedge between these two friends. She will challenge Jo to examine what is important. Jo will have to defend both to the other.

Thrown is the examination of the issues that unite us and divide us. They and we, have to decide what is real and what is perceived.

This is strong cast of five very dynamic actors who play five very powerful characters. The direction by Johnny McKnight is tight and engaging. The fluidly smooth script by Nat McCleary examines the conflict that come from differences and, more important, perception. The incredibly sturdy set by Karen Tennent works so well in the production, no small thing. The actors are framed by individual niches that they confidently crawl over. A beautiful set that is both strong and easy to assemble is no small issue.

Thrown is funny and scary and provocative. This is an elegant and thoughtful script with just the right cast, piloted by the solid direction of Johnny McKnight and supported by an awesome production team.
