UCAS

I saw UCAS on the day that the A level results were announced so this play was particularly pertinent.

It examines the pros and cons of going to university but first teacher Miss Turner must persuade her reticent inner city students to complete their personal statements and she only has an hour before the deadline.

She is trying to encourage them to enter higher education even though it may result in a student debt of 50K as sung in a searing song against debt.

The students are a disparate mix of characters and we only get to know them briefly, which is a pity as there is so much potential to develop this storyline.

The musical score is strong played by an accomplished on stage band and sung well but the musical’s plot is fairly lightweight.

It really doesn’t go anywhere and you begin to question whether you really do care about these characters’ future.

But the cast give it their best shot.
