Uglies Do Edinburgh

David Kent and Dereck Walker
Gryphon Venues at the Point Hotel

It's panto time!

Yes, this is, to all intents and purposes, a two (wo)man panto in which, after Cinderella's marriage, the Ugly Sisters head to Edinburgh to find their own "happy-ever-after".

It's standard panto fare, with everything you expect: there's the "Oh yes it is" moment, the "It's behind you" sequence, a few songs, lots of frocks, quite a bit of innuendo, audience interaction (including the audience song competition about which half can sing the best) and many of the standard panto gags. Christmas comes to Edinburgh in August!

Although that's a return to panto's origins: it was only in the late nineteenth century that it became a Christmas event.

Kent and Walker know their panto and how to work an audience and soon established exactly the right relationship with them. It's great fun and, as my last show at the 2011 Fringe, I enjoyed it immensely. If you're not a panto fan, however, Uglies Do Edinburgh is probably not for you, but if you are - and the audience I was in certainly seemed to be - you'll have a great time!
