Vote Macbeth!

Whether you are familiar with Shakespeare’s Macbeth or not, hold on while I tell you who everyone is.

President Duncan has just lost his Vice President, Cawdor. There will be other bodies falling. President Duncan has found Captain Macbeth to be a trustworthy politician so selects him as the new VP. Macduff is currently his press secretary and Hecate is in charge of the media. And there are three professional newswomen who do the predicting.

The all-knowing newsreaders predict Macbeth’s future and tell him that he will be president. But they also tell Banquo that his son will be president. Conflict. But the new VP and Mrs. Macbeth want more. Plots have they laid. (Ops, wrong Shakespeare.) Their future has been foretold by the three newswomen, also there sort of as chorus to help move the plot along as needed.

All of a sudden, the president is dead (and so is Banquo) and the audience must elect either Macbeth or Fleance, Banquo’s son and a media darling in high-heeled boots. "Fleance for President." The cards were stacked against Macbeth even it had not been predicted. There is still a great deal that happens which involves the rest of the plot here but this is the “Macbeth” part of the story. Politics is bloody; but we knew that.

This is not the first musical based strictly or loosely on Macbeth. Shakespeare was a great storyteller: worthy of borrowing or stealing from. This is a great vehicle for a ride through American politics. But this is one of the better ones, by far. Vote Macbeth cast is nothing less stellar. It’s a pleasure to see there are solid actors, And they can really sing. And all over the age of 20 who have taken the ride. Real actors that know what they are doing and look like they are having a good time. The script is so tight it squeaks. The music enhances the action and moves the plot along.

Considering the space they are working in, this has been very cleverly directed. The only thing that this musical needs is a real production. Give them an orchestra and a proper stage with all the accoutrements. And doors.
