Drink Rum with Expats, Ute Lemper, Ask Me Anything

Sh!t Theatre Drink Rum with Expats – tour starts 23 January

Rebecca Biscuit and Louise Mothersole's Sh!t Theatre Drink Rum with Expats won a Scotsman Fringe First and the Holden Street Theatres Award at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and now goes on tour.

Raucous and political, the show follows Biscuit and Mothersole's visit to Malta in 2016 for the Valletta European Capital of Culture for which Sh!t Theatre is being paid an inflated fee to make a show about expats, what the expats think about Brexit, for an audience of expats, to be performed at Malta’s expat drinking hole, The Pub. And of course, Sh!t Theatre loves pubs and drinking on stage so all is good.

But as the island of Malta deals daily with more boats of migrants offshore and the government is selling off EU passports, Sh!t Theatre Drink Rum with Expats becomes a show about home, nationhood and Europe—who is being let in and who is being kept out.

Biscuit and Mothersole perform the show (with Nala the dog); it is directed by Adam Brace.

Sh!t Theatre Drink Rum with Expats was originally commissioned by Charlie Cauchi (w/Latitude 65 and Valletta Capital of Culture) and now co-commissioned by South Street Arts and Camden People’s Theatre and is presented by Show and Tell in association with Soho Theatre.

The show visits Chichester Showroom, Norwich Arts Centre, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Holden Street Theatres, The Wardrobe Theatre Bristol, Reading South Street, Liverpool Unity Theatre, Salisbury Playhouse, Leeds Playhouse, Theatre Delicatessen Sheffield, Lighthouse Poole, Cambridge Junction, Folkestone Quarterhouse and Mercury Theatre Colchester, with further dates to be announced.

Ute Lemper: Rendezvous with Marlene – tour starts 30 January

At the start of her career, German-born Ute Lemper was compared to film star and singer Marlene Dietrich.

One day in 1988, 89-year-old Dietrich telephoned the young Lemper out of the blue and there followed one of the star's legendary hours-long calls.

Thirty years on and now a West End and Broadway star herself, Lemper has written and performs a personal homage to the Hollywood icon.

In this dialogue between Lemper and Dietrich, a life spanning eight decades of history, courage, work, politics, glamour and sex is explored with songs that span the Berlin cabaret years to Dietrich's collaboration with Burt Bacharach.

The show is presented by RLN Music.

Ute Lemper: Rendezvous with Marlene visits St George’s Hall Bristol, Turner Sims Southampton, Electric Theatre Guildford, The Old Market Hove, The Old Rep Theatre Birmingham, Royal Northern College of Music Manchester, Leeds City Varieties Leeds and The Queen’s Hall Edinburgh.

Ask Me Anything – tour starts 30 January

Ask Me Anything is set in a 1990s teenager's bedroom harking back to the time of teen magazine ‘problem pages’ that members of award-winning theatre company The Paper Birds read whilst growing up.

Based on solicited verbatim accounts from today's teenagers concerned with cyber-addiction, self-expression, peer pressure, sisterhood and youth suicide, these agony aunts deliver with mischief and mayhem to a musical backdrop of original live composition from singer-songwriter Rosie Doonan.

Ask Me Anything is created and presented by The Paper Birds and co-produced with Live Theatre. It visits Live Theatre Newcastle, VAULT Festival London, G Live Guildford, Black Box York, Birmingham Hippodrome, The Old Market Brighton, Marlowe Theatre Canterbury, Chats Palace London and Theatre Royal Plymouth.
