45North is supporting three artists in the first of its Seed Commission Schemes for 2021.
The cohort of three were selected from trans and gender non-conforming applicants who practise in various disciplines producing live performance. They are:
- Composer, sound designer and cellist Anna Clock, who will develop a binaural audio experience exploring how history, class, age and physical intimacy impact a power dynamic within a genderqueer space.
- A performance and cabaret artist, Chiyo's new work looks at misogyny and its parallels with their own experiences as a mixed-race, gender non-conforming trans man.
- Tamil writer and sex and relationships educator Gayathiri Kamalakanthan will work on the story of a Tamil non-binary child through reimagining a period party, a rite of passage into 'womanhood' in Tamil culture.
The three will each receive a £1,000 fee plus £750 towards collaborator fees together with rehearsal or office space, mentorship and one-to-one support from scheme director Tabby Lamb.
Non-binary writer and performer Lamb said, “we were overwhelmed by the vast amount of trans folk who applied for this commission, and then once again overwhelmed by the talent and skill of each application, but after passionate discussion we ended up with three of the most exciting artists I've ever had the pleasure to work with: a luminary of the cabaret world, a technical wizard and a passionate sex educator. I can't wait to help them develop their skills and put them on the path towards creating their first full-length piece of theatre.”
