It may be that today is most important to UK readers because it is Mother's Day, or perhaps just because the clocks have changed, but it is also noteworthy for being World Theatre Day.
Established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute ITI, 27 March is celebrated differently in theatres and at ITI centres across the globe but each year features a message from a theatre practitioner on theatre, culture and peace, a tradition started by Jean Cocteau at the first World Theatre Day in 1962.
This year—marking WTD's 60th anniversary—the address comes from the American theatre and opera director and festival director Peter Sellars. Sellars has received a MacArthur Fellowship, the Erasmus Prize for contributions to European culture, the Gish Prize and the Polar Music Prize.
As in previous years Sellars's address is translated into more than fifty languages and is made available in print and for free viewing online in French and English.
