House of Lords Communications Committee

In a session on the use of AI in the creative industries, the House of Lords Communications Committee will take evidence from a robot.

Ai-Da, who is appearing in its capacity as a proxy witness for creator Aidan Meller, is the world’s first ultra-realistic robot artist and will answer questions regarding its own creative process and how it differs from human methods.

Ai-Da uses cameras (in its eyes) and algorithms to interpret its surroundings and chooses its own responses. It draws, paints and sculpts using robotic arms.

The Communications Committee will also take evidence from Aidan Meller, director at Ai-Da ROBOT, on how technology is driving creativity and its impact on the creative sector.

Starting the session the Committee will hear from:

  • Paul Fleming, General Secretary at Equity
  • Dan Conway, Chief Executive Officer at Publishers Association
  • Dr Andres Guadamuz, Reader in Intellectual Property Law at University of Sussex

The sessions will be available to view live starting at 2:30PM on 11 October and on demand online.

The creative industries inquiry has previously taken evidence from Caroline Norbury OBE, Chief Executive Officer, Creative UK; Annette Mees, Artistic Director, Audience Labs, and Visiting Senior Research Fellow, Culture and Creative Industries, Kings College London; Tonya Nelson, London Area Director, Arts Council England; Ed Shedd, Partner, Technology, Media and Telecommunications, Deloitte. This is also available to view online.
