London's Arcola Theatre has announced it is to build a new outdoor performance complete with bar.

The new venue, designed by award-winning stage designer Jon Bausor, will be built by freelance theatre and live events technicians and will open in December.

Occupying the site of the former Arcola Tent close to the existing venue, the new space will offer COVID-compliant flexible seating for an audience of 90 and, with Arcola's signature approach to environmental sustainability, reclaimed and recycled materials will be used in its creation.

A roof structure will provide all-year protection from the elements whilst ensuring an 'outdoor' air flow so that groups of up to six people from across households can attend.

The new space, to be called, Arcola Outside, will be the centre of a new festival of outdoor performance, Today I’m Wiser, in 2021.

Arcola Theatre has received financial support from individuals, Arts Council England and the Culture Recovery Fund. A fundraising campaign is in process for the building of Arcola Outside and next year's programme of events.
