The Apprentices

An initiative is being successfully piloted to provide training and work experience for young people in the creative sector, and now a second phase is being launched.

Spearheaded by Artswork, a youth and arts centred development agency, what makes this programme different from the usual apprentice–training approach is that the focus here is on work-based learning, with the bespoke curriculum delivered in a creative and cultural setting rather than a college setting.

Although there are no guaranteed contracts of employment after participating in the year–long Creative Apprenticeship programme, those taking part will benefit from having an accredited qualification gained through practical experience with a regular income, and an understanding of what it means to work in the creative sector.

The benefits to the small businesses which comprise, theatres, galleries and an outdoor arts festival are access to the shared resource of the apprentices and an opportunity to build a diversified workforce with a reduced dependence on unpaid volunteers and interns.

Seven apprentices (between the ages of 16 and 23) enrolled in the pilot and the programme is looking to recruit more young people for the second phase.
