Creative UK respond to the Spring Statement

The Chancellor's Spring Statement earlier this week was received with condemnation from many quarters including the union Equity and Creative UK, as well as many individuals from the theatre sector.

Creative UK chief executive, Caroline Norbury, responded by saying, "once again, creative freelancers, entrepreneurs and those early in their careers will be among the hardest hit by the impacts of inflation. Critical steps must be taken in advance of the Autumn Budget if we are to truly unleash the potential of the UK's Creative Industries and ensure opportunities are open to all."

Norbury's statement went on to call for the Government to:

  • Support UK freelancers with vital safety nets such as sick pay, parental pay and pensions.
  • Drive creative investment through expanded tax reliefs which could also lead to the creation of new jobs.
  • Unleash creative ideas through wider R&D tax reliefs encompassing the arts, humanities and social sciences.
