The Customs House has announced that Abigail Lawson is to direct this year’s play from the Takeover Young Writer in Residence.

The County Durham actor was cast in the previous two plays, WORMTOWN and Isolation, and will be mentored by Jake Smith, as well as the creative team at The Customs House.

“I have been lucky enough to be cast in the two previous Takeover plays,” Abigail Lawson said, “and I genuinely can't believe my luck at being asked to make my directorial debut in 2020. Being involved for the third year running and also being able to challenge myself in an area I never thought I'd get the opportunity to do so is just mind boggling in the most positive way possible. I will be eternally grateful for the constant support and love The Customs House have shown me over the past two year, and hope I will do them proud!”

“We are thrilled to be able to develop the creative practice of such an exciting North East talent,” said Fiona Martin, Deputy Director—Learning and Participation at the Customs House, “and to be able to give this opportunity to someone who has delivered exceptional work here, is what makes The Takeover so exciting for us.”

The play, for which submissions are still being sought, will be performed in the venue’s Main House as the finale piece of the Takeover Festival on 29 May.
