Young people from Barbican Theatre’s Dance Moves and Dance Junction workshops have been working with lead practitioner Becky Miles to choreograph work inspired by the environment.

“It’s really fun and you get to learn fun dance phrases,” said Rosie who takes part in Dance Moves (8 to 11s). "It’s different from school: you can incorporate your own ideas and movement. We had to pick something about the environment and create our own movement to show it."

In January 2016, the theatre is inviting new young people to join its groups for a term, when they will be making and rehearsing for Performance Platforms in the spring.

Dance Director Jules Laville said, “we think it’s vital to let Performance Training participants create work around their interests and the world they live in, which is why we’re using the environment as this year’s inspiration.

"The young people are incredibly creative and have made some really beautiful pieces of choreography to reflect our surroundings, how they’re changing and the impact of this. It’s been a fantastic way to learn about an important issue through movement, whilst having lots of fun along the way."

Sisters Tilly & Molly who joined Dance Junction (12+) said, “we come to Dance Junction because it's great dancing which helps us to express our passion for dance but most of all to have fun. It's different from other activities: you are never afraid to have a go. The choreographing environment project is fun as it allows us to experiment with different shapes, ideas and movements.”
