NE theatre company Cloud Nine is to revive Death at Dawn, Peter Mortimer’s play about World War I, in February and March.

Its first production in September 2014 was a winner in one category (Best Newcomer for actress Heather Carroll) and finalist in two (Best Performance and Best Writer) in the Journal Culture Awards and its director Jackie Fielding was named as Best Director in the BTG’s Best of 2014 awards.

Sadly, Jackie Fielding died suddenly in 2015 and Neil Armstrong, who works regularly with the company, will step into her shoes for the revival which will be at the Memorial Hall in Wallsend from 19 to 23 February and the Discovery Museum in Newcastle from 26 February to 2 March. It will again be performed as in-the-round and will feature its original cast of seven professional actors and four North East drama students.

Based on the real-life story of William Hunter, a young North Shields soldier executed for desertion in France in 1916, Death at Dawn tackles head-on the subject of an army which shoots its own men and this revival marks the centenary of the Hunter’s death.
