Nick Payne’s The Same Deep Water As Me opens the Donmar Warehouse autumn season

The world première of Evening Standard Award-winning Nick Payne’s new play, The Same Deep Water As Me, will open the autumn season at London's Donmar Warehouse. John Crowley will direct a cast that includes Nigel Lindsay, Daniel Mays and Monica Dolan.

Modern classic Roots will be directed by James Macdonald and will star Call the Midwife's Jessica Raine and Linda Bassett, and Tom Hiddleston will take the title role in Coriolanus to be directed by the Theatre's artistic director Josie Rourke. The production will be live broadcast into cinemas in partnership with National Theatre Live.

Away from its London base the Donmar’s all-female production of Julius Caesar will receive its US première with original cast members Harriet Walter, Frances Barber, Jenny Jules and Cush Jumbo. Phyllida Lloyd directs.

Also having its US première is Manchester International Festival and Park Avenue Armory co-production The Machine. The Manchester run is in July. Written by Matt Charman, Francesca Annis stars and Josie Rourke directs. The Machine will be performed in a specially designed arena.

Rourke said, "This year, the Donmar is a champion of British and Irish theatre. This next season of new and classic work examines life on these islands and considers how we find our place in the world.

'"Struggle, laughter and tragedy are in all these plays. When work on our stage can not only ask what essentially it is to be human but also ask what it is to be human right now—that’s dynamite.”
