Together with their new artistic vision—outlined in a separate article—Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre has unveiled a “bold and dynamic programme” for their Spring / Summer 2013 season with which to back it all up.
It starts in February with To Kill A Mockingbird, the stage dramatisation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and one of the most enduring and well-known stories of our time, widely regarded as a great modern classic.
Other programme highlights include the world première of Cannibals—a new play by Rory Mullarkey commissioned by the theatre and directed by Michael Longhurst.
Henrik Ibsen’s ground-breaking masterpiece A Doll’s House sees the return of the eye-catching talents of award-winning actress Cush Jumbo who is reunited with director Greg Hersov following the successful As You Like It.
Blanche McIntyre, winner of the Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer in 2011, directs Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, and Told by an Idiot’s Paul Hunter directs Too Clever by Half, a rarely-performed biting satire by Russian playwright, Alexandr Ostrovsky.
The season will also feature world première productions by two winners of the 2011 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting: Janice Okoh’s Three Birds in association with the Bush Theatre and directed by Sarah Frankcom, and Alistair McDowall’s Brilliant Adventures, directed by Caroline Steinbeis, winner of the 2009 JMK Award for Young Directors, which is a co-production with Live Theatre, Newcastle.
