Girl in the Machine

Girl in the Machine, written by Steph Smith and produced by Sunderland-based Theatre Space NE, a play which explores the evolving and often unsettling relationship between humanity and technology, is to tour the region in February. It asks what happens when the line between physical and digital rapidly dissipates.

Described as resembling “an episode of dystopian TV series Black Mirror but with a poetic heart worthy of Ray Bradbury at his warmest” is a two-hander which explores our present-day unease about digital intrusiveness. It was first staged at The Traverse during the Edinburgh International Science Festival last year and anatomises our relationships with technology.

The play is performed by Theatre Space NE’s Artistic Director Corinne Kilvington and Lawrence Neale (Beyond the End of the Road, Rainbird) and is directed by Jamie Brown (Bobby Robson Saved My Life, Geordie The Musical).

“This tour represents an important and exciting step in the natural progression of Theatre Space North East,” said Corinne Kilvington. “We have built a reputation of engaging diverse audiences with wide-ranging content and Girl in the Machine serves to extend that spectrum. We’re very fortunate too to have the opportunity to stage such a ground-breaking play written by one of the UK’s most sought-after and respected female writers.”

The production tours to:

  • The Customs House, South Shields (10 February)
  • The Exchange, North Shields (11 February)
  • Seventeen Nineteen, Sunderland (12 February)
  • Theatre@41 Monkgate, York (17 February)
  • Gala Theatre, Durham (19 February)
  • Northern Stage (25 February)
