Only in its second year the Kenneth Tynan Award recognises the contribution of a British theatre or dance professional to the field of dramaturgy.

Named after Kenneth Tynan, who can be regarded as the first dramaturg in British Theatre after relinquishing his role as a critic for The Observer to be the National Theatre's first literary manager, the Award is unique in recognising this aspect of the performance-making process.

The shortlist this year comprises Michael Duke, the artistic director of Belfast's Tinderbox Theatre Company, Ruth Little, dramaturg Akram Khan Company and associate director at Cape Farewell, and Max Stafford-Clark, artistic director of Out of Joint.

Paul Sirett will present the award in a ceremony that closes a day-long collection of discussions, a semi-staged reading and a party with live jazz.
