West Yorkshire Playhouse is currently touring Maxine Peake’s stage play Beryl, based on her radio play about Beryl Burton, the champion cyclist.

The show premièred in Leeds in 2014 but this tour has two versions (same cast, two sets) one of which is doing one-night stands on a rural touring scheme and the larger version is touring to middle-scale theatres—including the Quays at The Lowry.

Beryl is at The Lowry November 2-4.

Peake’s play celebrates the life of unsung sporting legend Beryl Burton—the greatest woman on two wheels.

With husband, daughter and cycling club at her side, she became five-times world pursuit champion, 13-times national pursuit champion, twice road-racing world champion and still made it home in time for dinner.
