A new play inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth will be aired for the first time during a special event at The Dukes on October 14.

Mr & Mrs Macbeth is penned by the award-winning writer Kevin Dyer, one of The Dukes Associate Artists who has written several plays for the Lancaster theatre.

A rehearsed reading of this new play will take place as part of The Dukes Kick Start initiative, which began in April and allows audiences to offer feedback on plays in development.

Mr & Mrs Macbeth is the story of a man returning from war and how he and his wife react to one another after being apart for so long. This ferocious homecoming is the situation in Shakespeare’s great play and is also the result of hundreds of hours of interviews which Kevin has conducted with men coming back from war and the women who have waited for them to return.

“I am particularly interested in the moment when he walks back through the door. I have shamelessly asked prying, personal questions about appearances, emotions and the realities of the first minute when two lovers re-meet,” said Kevin.

During the event there will be a discussion with the writer and audience to gauge opinions and, depending on funding, the play could become a reality in the near future.

This is just what’s happened with the first play to undergo the Kick Start treatment. I Was A Wife will be staged at The Dukes next year.
