The work of Royal Ballet Principal Ballerina Nadia Nerina is celebrated in an exhibition at the Royal Opera House which opens on the 22nd of this month.

South African born Nerina studied with Marie Rambert and at Sadler’s Wells Ballet School before joining the Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet, then a new company being established by Ninette de Valois. She went on to be Principal Ballerina with The Royal Ballet from 1947-1966.

Her ground-breaking work on television in the late 1950s and early 1960s with BBC producer Margaret Dale and her touring appearances away from the company are central to ballet reaching new audiences during this period.

The exhibition comprises costumes, photographs and other material from Nerina’s own collection (now donated to Royal Opera House Collections) and a film commissioned from independent filmmaker Lynne Wake which includes extracts from La Fille Mal Gardée and Giselle.

The exhibition runs from 22 March to 17 August 2013 but visitors are recommended to check that exhibition areas are open when planning their visit.
