The Hired Man - one of the three productions in the season

The National Youth Music Theatre will present three works in three venues over the summer showcasing the talent of the 150 actors, musicians, creative and backstage teams aged between 11 and 23 that make up the company.

The programme starts in July with The Ragged Child, a stark and moving account of child deprivation in London in the 1850s with book and lyrics by Jeremy James Taylor OBE and Frank Whately and music by David Nield.

In August, The Hired Man, based on the novel by Melvyn Bragg with a score and lyrics by Howard Goodall, tells the stirring tale of Cumbrian rural and industrial working life based on the life of the writer's grandparents.

The closing piece is Brass, a specially commissioned new musical from Benjamin Till to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War which will be presented at the City Varieties Music Hall Leeds.

The Ragged Child will play the Rose Theatre Kingston from 23 to 27 July, The Hired Man will play the St James Theatre London from 13 to 16 August and Brass will play the City Varieties Music Hall Leeds from 20 to 23 August.
