Birmingham Hippodrome’s romcom musical Hot Mess is to have two previews at the venue before its première at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Jack Godfrey and Ellie Coote’s pop comedy musical looks at the tempestuous relationship between earth and humanity. It reimagines the climate crisis as a story of love, hope and the ultimate break-up.

Danielle Steers who appeared in The Cher Show in 2022 and played Catherine Parr in Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’s SIX the Musical at London’s Vaudeville Theatre in 2021 will be Earth in Hot Mess. Tobias Turley will play Humanity.

The creative team includes Paul Gatehouse (sound designer), Joe Beighton (musical supervisor and co-orchestrator), Alexzandra Sarmiento (movement director), Shankho Chaudhuri (set and costume designer), Ryan Joseph Stafford (lighting designer), Issie Osborne (musical director), Deirdre O'Halloran (dramaturg), Lex Kaby (intimacy director), Caroline Mirfin (costume supervisor), James Ashfield (producer) and Finlay Carroll (assistant producer).

Hot Messis the first Edinburgh Festival Fringe production from the UK’s only in-house new musical theatre department. Its head, Deirdre O’Halloran, said, “we’re so excited for Birmingham audiences to get a sneak peak of this fantastic new musical. Ellie and Jack have written a terrifically witty show and we can’t wait for Danielle and Tobias to bring these unusual characters to life.”

Hot Mess can be seen in the Patrick Studio at the Hippodrome on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 July before playing at Pleasance Two, Edinburgh from Wednesday 30 July until Monday 25 August.
