New version of A Christmas Carol in Birmingham

A new stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol is the festive attraction at Birmingham REP.

A cast of 13 will bring Dickens’s characters to life. Matthew Ashforde plays Scrooge, with Guy Lewis as Bob Cratchit and Tania Mathurin as Mrs Cratchit. Paul Ryan and Joanna Lee Martin will play Mr and Mrs Fezziwig.

Completing the cast will be Jo Servi as Jacob Marley, Roddy Peters as Nephew Fred, Angela Wynter as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Bethan Mary-James as Belle, Christina Bennington as Marilyn, Iddon Jones as Peter Cratchit, Francesca Zoutewelle as Fredericka and Mark Akinfolarin as Emmeline.

Tessa Walker, an associate director at Birmingham REP, directs the production which has been adapted by Bryony Lavery. Her play Frozen was first performed at Birmingham REP in 1998 and won the TMA best new play award. In 2007 she adapted Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya for the REP.

Designer is Ti Green while music and lyrics are by Jason Carr. Lighting is by Mark Doubleday, sound by Rich Walsh, movement by Anna Morrissey and musical direction by Tim Jackson.

A Christmas Carol opens on Wednesday 27 November, with press night on Tuesday 3 December. It runs until Saturday 4 January.
