New version for Christmas: Cinderella

The “much-awaited return of a smash hit, sell-out show” is among the highlights of Derby Theatre’s new season which runs until spring 2024.

The season will begin with 4 Walls, a Derby Theatre and Derby CAN (Creative Arts Network) production, which is a “high-energy, multimedia experience with live music, performance, dance and large-scale digital projection by local hip-hop artist and music producer Rukus”. It will run from Thursday 7 until Saturday 9 September.

The theatre says audiences will be “thrilled” to see the return of the “phenomenally popular” Brassed Off which features brass band Derwent Brass and was a sell-out in 2015. Paul Allen’s adaptation based on the screenplay by Mark Herman is set in Grimley, Yorkshire in 1994 and there is uncertainty because the pit is under threat of closure. It will return to Derby Theatre from Friday 29 September until Saturday 28 October.

There will be two festive shows, a new version by Annie Siddons of Cinderella in the main house from Friday 24 November until Sunday 31 December and Three Billy Goats Gruff, a Hiccup Theatre in collaboration with Derby Theatre and Polka Theatre presentation, in the Studio from Thursday 30 November until Sunday 31 December.

In 2024, there will be three produced shows, Animal Farm, a Derby Theatre, Octagon Theatre Bolton and Hull Truck Theatre production, from Wednesday 28 February until Saturday 16 March, Alice in Wonderland, a “wonderful and whacky theatrical adventure bursting with brilliant and original music perfect for all ages”, from Saturday 22 June until Saturday 6 July, and Welfare (It Were Welfare To Us) from Friday 27 September until Saturday 12 October, a new play by Abi Zakarian which will involve the theatre being transformed into the site of the Derbyshire miners’ holiday camp where audiences can expect “brass bands, rousing speeches, the best entertainment and a whole load of bingo”.

The full programme is available at the Derby Theatre web site.
