Price Of Money from the Belarus Free Theatre looks at how money has been depicted in theatre

Based on Aristophanes' Plutus, the first political satire on money, and Ben Johnson's work on capitalism, The Staple Of News, the Belarus Free Theatre's new play Price Of Money looks at how money has been depicted in theatre.

The play takes the form of devised documentary theatre and is directed by Vladimir Shcherban, whose work has been the subject of censorship and who lost his position as a director at the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre because of his association with Belarus Free Theatre, the only independent theatre company in Belarus.

The company was founded in 2005 by artistic directors Natalia Kaliada and Nicolai Khalezin who worked for years under constant threat of intimidation.

Following the 2010 presidential election Natalia Kaliada was arrested and together with Nicolai Khalezin and Vladimir Shcherban she fled the country. They were granted political asylum in the UK and the company now works as associate artists with the Young Vic and the Academy of Music and Theatre Arts in Falmouth

Price Of Money is the start of an ongoing relationship between Belarus Free Theatre and the Albany in South East London.

Albany CEO Gavin Barlow has said, "We're delighted to have one of the world's most exhilarating, politically radical theatre companies premiering their new show at the Albany

"Price Of Money represents the start of an ongoing relationship between Belarus Free Theatre and the Albany, and we're looking forward to welcoming them to Deptford"

Price Of Money will run from 16 to 20 September. It is suitable for ages 12 and over. Visit Belarus Free Theatre for further information.
