Protein 21 Reimagine

Greenwich-based Luca Silvestrini’s Protein company, which was to celebrate its 21st birthday this year by bringing together trainee and non-professional dance companies around the country, invited groups to create their own dance pieces inspired by a show from Protein’s repertoire, working alongside one of Protein’s dance artists.

The plan for Protein 21: Reimagine was for the groups to make short films of their work and many planned to perform them for families and friends, but, due to the coronavirus several of the London groups weren’t able to finish their projects or perform them. Protein has therefore made a five minute mini-documentary using footage some of the groups had submitted.

The groups featured in the film include dance groups for older people in Stratford and Deptford, Magpie Dance, a dance group for learning disabled people and pupils at Plumstead Manor school, and Dynamix, a street dance crew from Thamesmead.

The early stages of their work are featured alongside interviews with Silvestrini, dance teachers and participants.
