David Tennant as Richard II

Six Royal Shakespeare Company productions staged in Stratford are to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on the Opus Arte label.

The first will be the 2013 recording of Richard II, directed by RSC artistic director Gregory Doran and featuring David Tennant in the title role.

The production was the first show in Doran's six-year plan to present all of Shakespeare's works.

It was broadcast live on 13 November 2013 from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford to more than 100 cinemas around the UK and was also available in North America, Australia, Japan and Northern Europe.

"The chance to work with such a world-renowned institution as the Royal Shakespeare Company is a privilege and an exciting challenge,” said Ben Pateman, Opus Arte’s executive producer.

Opus Arte is affiliated to the Royal Opera House and has previously released opera and ballet productions on DVD and Blu-ray.

Richard II will be released on Tuesday 6 May. The DVD extras include a commentary by Doran while the Blu-ray has an interview with Tennant in which he discusses his thoughts on the play and the character of Richard II.

The next three productions to be recorded will be Henry IV Part I on 14 May and Henry IV Part II on 18 June during their run at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre; and The Two Gentlemen of Verona on 3 September.
