“Talented cast”: The Boy in the Dress

Rufus Hound, Irvine Iqbal, Natasha Lewis and Forbes Masson are the first cast members announced for The Boy in the Dress, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new musical which opens in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford in November 2019.

David Walliams’s comedy has been adapted by former Royal Shakespeare Company writer-in-residence Mark Ravenhill. Songs are by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers.

Hound, who plays the dad of central character Dennis, is appearing as Constant in The Provoked Wife by John Vanbrugh in the Swan Theatre, Stratford until September. In 2018, he played Sancho Panza for the RSC in James Fenton’s adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote.

Iqbal will make his RSC debut as shopkeeper Raj. Lewis plays Dennis’s best friend Darvesh’s mum. RSC associate artist Masson is Mr Hawtrey, the headmaster from Dennis’s school.

RSC artistic director Gregory Doran who directs said, “it’s tremendous to welcome such a talented cast of new and established RSC company members to our new musical production of The Boy in the Dress, particularly one with such a strong background of excellent musical theatre performances and first-class comic talent.”

The Boy in the Dress will run from Friday 8 November until Sunday 8 March 2020.
