Sheffield Theatres new season announcements

News from Sheffield Theatres

In the wake of a further funding cut, artistic director of Sheffield Theatres, Daniel Evans, announced new items for the programme saying, "this is undoubtedly a challenging time for us, having received our third round of local authority cuts in as many years, it’s crucial that we continue to celebrate the essential part Sheffield Theatres plays in making Sheffield a vibrant place to live."

In the new season, Kay Mellor will direct her self–penned A Passionate Woman for The Lyceum in September and a subsequent national tour. This is the comedy's first major revival which was adapted by Kay Mellor for BBC television.

Lynda Bellingham leads the cast, which includes Christopher Timothy and Peter McMillan.

For the Crucible, Sheffield Theatres associate director Paul Miller returns to direct Shakespeare's story of jealousy, tyranny and redemption The Winter’s Tale.

Amongst the casting announcements are that Matthew Kelly will play Hector and Nicholas Day will take the role of the Headmaster in the previously reported production of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys will play the Crucible in June directed by Michael Longhurst.

Also announced is the transfer of award–winning Mike Bartlett’s Bull to the Brits Off Broadway Festival. Directed by Clare Lizzimore with design by Soutra Gilmour, sound design by Christopher Shutt and lighting design by Peter Mumford, this show was seen at the Studio Theatre in February.

Original cast members Adam James, Eleanor Matsuura and Sam Troughton will play 59E59 Theaters in New York from 22 April to 2 June. For further information visit www.britsoffbroadway.com.
