Adam Penford directs Ira Levin’s comedy thriller Deathtrap as the first play of the spring season at Salisbury Playhouse.

Kim Wall plays fading writer Sidney Bruhl and Sam Phillips plays his young visitor, Clifford. Both actors will be known to television viewers from Armstrong and Miller and The Syndicate respectively.

Also in the cast are Julien Ball, Beverley Klein and Lesley Vickerage.

Award-winning Brendan Murray is to once again direct Nathan Bessell in Murray's play Up Down Man, the sequel to his story about a teenager with Down’s Syndrome Up Down Boy.

This, with Bristol's Myrtle Theatre Company, is one of two collaborations; the other is for new play This Land that will run at the Playhouse in April.

Written by Siân Owen, This Land is a funny and thought-provoking look at fracking from the perspective of the village residents neighbouring the dig; it will tour rural venues after opening in Ludlow in March.

Salisbury Playhouse will also see two new productions: musical Singin’ in the Rain in association with Octagon Theatre Bolton and New Vic Theatre Newcastle-under-Lyme and artistic director Gareth Machin will direct Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler adapted by Brian Friel.

For a fifth year, festival Theatre Fest West will take place across a number of venues celebrating the work of theatre makers from across the south west. The full programme will be available shortly.

Visiting companies include Told by an Idiot and Chichester Festival Theatre's Single Spies by Alan Bennett.
