London's St James Theatre plays host to a one-day event on 1 December, Silent Shakespeare.

A rare opportunity to see silent motion pictures of Shakespeare plays, Silent Shakespeare, has seven digitally-restored films produced between 1899 and 1911 presented with a specially composed score.

The films include King John (1899, UK), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1909, USA), The Merchant of Venice (1910, Italy) and Richard III (1911, UK) and demonstrate the techniques of hand stencilling and tinted prints of the period.

The score, by award-winning composer Laura Rossi, will be performed live by the London Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by Hugh Brunt.

Silent Shakespeare is presented by Canis Media and the London Contemporary Orchestra in partnership with The British Art Music Series. Both performances on 1 December are given in aid of Sense, the charity for deafblind people.
