The performances of Scrooge at Birmingham's New Alexandra Theatre from 28 October have been cancelled as veteran star Tommy Steele has suffered an injury.

76-year-old Steele has been playing the title role in the Leslie Bricusse musical based on Charles Dickens's most popular story for a number of years around the country, including a run at the London Palladium last Christmas.

The theatre announced on Friday, "Tommy Steele has suffered an injury which requires immediate surgery". No details of the nature or seriousness of the injury were given, but customers will be contacted soon about refunds.

The tour is now scheduled to begin at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton on 12 November before visiting Leeds, Blackpool, Brighton and Llandudno.
