Public booking opened on Friday for the world première of Stephen Ward, the much–heralded new musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber, with book and lyrics by Christopher Hampton and Don Black.
The show is about the man behind the 1963 scandal which has come to be known as the Profumo Affair, in which MP John Profumo was disgraced, damaging the Conservative government of the day led by Harold Macmillan.
Stephen Ward was responsible for introducing Profumo to Christine Keeler with whom he had an affair, and Ward was tried for living off immoral earnings; he committed suicide before the end of the trial and is now largely regarded as a victim of the scandal.
Richard Eyre will direct the show which starts previews at London's Aldwych Theatre on 3 December and is currently booking to 1 March 2014.
