Special guidance for performing industry workers from the HMRC

Earlier in the month, HMRC published new guidance on employment status and paying tax for performers and workers in the industry such as stage managers, theatre designers, directors and choreographers.

Working with Equity and others, HMRC hopes to provide some clarity on the impact of employment status on tax as well as a better understanding of the rules.

HMRC said, “we want to make sure that everyone has ready access to all the advice and support they need. We are pleased that Equity and other industry organisations have worked with us produce this new guidance which should help those in the sector understand how the tax rules apply to the work they do reducing any unexpected surprises in the future.”

The Employment Status Manual is available online.
