Subscribers to industry publication The Stage are now able to nominate candidates for the 2022 Awards.

There are three new categories: two are entirely new and these are Digital Project of the Year and Community Project of the Year, but the overall number of awards is up by one as the categories Regional and London Theatre of the Year have been merged to make new category, Theatre of the Year.

The others are Fringe Theatre of the Year, Producer of the Year, Theatre Building of the Year, Innovation Award, and Unsung Hero.

The Stage editor Alistair Smith said, “we have adapted our award categories to reflect the way British theatre is responding to a changing world. It has been a difficult time for British theatre, but also one during which we have seen some fantastic work—especially in the spheres of digital theatre and community programmes. Meanwhile, judges wanted to remove what had come to seem like an unnecessary distinction between work taking place in London and elsewhere in the UK to create a single Theatre of the Year category.”

All eligible candidates (organisations of any size and individuals who subscribe to The Stage) may nominate others and/or self-nominate (except for The Unsung Hero category where self-nomination is not permitted) for work since December 2020.

A judging panel will assess all nominations across a number of criteria in consultation with a group of industry experts.

The window for nominations closes at midnight on 26 November, the shortlist will be revealed on 16 December and the winners will be announced on 31 January at the awards ceremony to be held at the newly refurbished Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London.
