Israeli music and dance company Mayumana will make its UK debut at Hackney Empire with its latest work Currents for a limited run from 18 April to 7 May 2017.

Mayumana was founded in Tel Aviv in 1996 by Eylon Nuphar and Boaz Berman, taking its name from the Hebrew word Meyumanut meaning skill. The company is a multicultural collective of more than 20 different nationalities and has become one of Israel’s largest cultural exports.

Two groups are on a journey. Each is inspired by a different aesthetic and artistic approach to the essence of light and electricity, by the legendary rivalry between two titans of science, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, inventors and pioneers in the early days of electrical engineering.

Dialogue, soundscape, lighting and visual effects all combine to produce a theatrical experience, fueled by a sense of humour and mischief.

With an international cast, Currents features specially made musical instruments, massive video art projections and video mapping. The eleven performers play different instruments, juggling between different sounds and rhythms to produce a blend of narrative storytelling, movement and visuals.
