In its 40th anniversary year, the national advisory public body for theatres, Theatres Trust's, Christmas Appeal focuses on the future.

Monies from the appeal will be used support theatres’ viability, including funding viability studies and providing advice and support.

Earlier this year Theatre Trust supported Burnley Empire Theatre Trust housed in the Grade II listed Burnley Empire in commissioning a market analysis and a study of the viable reuse of the building is imminent.

Such information is crucial in funding applications and the appeal hopes to raise £5,000. The Appeal has an online giving page.

Other news from Theatres Trust includes funding to a number of London theatres for improvements to accessibility and conditions.

Under its London Theatres Small Grants Scheme, Soho Theatre, Theatre Peckham, Tricycle Theatre, Young Actors Theatre and Omnibus are receiving support.

The London Theatres Small Grants Scheme aims to have provided 50 grants by 2020; its major funders are Fawn James and the Mackintosh Foundation.

The deadline for applications for the current round is 22 August. Details of eligibility and application information is available online.

Theatres nationwide in need of support to deal with immediate repair and maintenance issues may apply to a new Theatres Trust fund created in partnership with Wolfson Foundation.

Wolfson Foundation has a history of providing capital funding to the cultural sector and this Urgent Repairs Scheme seeks to address the issue of funds not being available for maintenance and repair when budgets are under pressure.

Venues which would otherwise face closure may apply for support of up to £15,000, with funding round one closing in March and round two closing in September.

Eligible theatres will have a year-round programme of live performance and those without statutory listed status will need to demonstrate the architectural significance of their building. Would–be applicants are advised to contact Theatres Trust to discuss their submissions in advance.
