balletLORENT’s 2020 performance of The Lost Happy Endings and its 2017 performance of Rumpelstiltskin will be shown on TV this Christmas.

The Lost Happy Endings is an original story written by Carol Ann Duffy, directed by balletLORENT Artistic Director Liv Lorent (MBE) and narrated by Joanna Lumley. It will be shown on Marquee TV on 18 December.

Also written by Carol Ann Duffy, winner of the Fantastic for Families Audience Choice Award Rumpelstiltskin was filmed at a live performance at Northern Stage. It will also be shown on Marquee TV on 18 December and then on Sky Arts on 19 December.

The Marquee TV performances cost from £4.99 and the Sky Arts performance is free to view for Sky customers.

“Like so many companies, in autumn 2020 we should have been touring The Lost Happy Endings around the UK,” said Artistic Director Liv Lorent. “While theatres stayed shut, we took the chance to film in one of the most beautiful theatres in the country - the Newcastle Theatre Royal. This amazing story by Carol Ann Duffy of change and resilience and reinvention feels ever more timely, and we have longed to share it with audiences. To do it through film has been wonderful - the detail and the design of the show and clarity of the performances by the dancers is powerfully engaging. We didn’t create a filmed show, but rather made a film from our set on the stage. It is unlike anything we have attempted before, but we are so glad we did.

“We hope audiences who wouldn’t have found us in a theatre may discover us for the first time with our unique take on storytelling though dance theatre. And for audiences who have missed us - you will find us on a screen near you this Christmas!”

The film follows the story of Jub, a magical girl who lives in the forest and guards the happy endings to all the bedtime stories and fairytales, but one day an otherworldly witch steals them and at bedtime the stories are destroyed. Packed with spirit, adventure and surprises, this fantasy family show features everyone’s favourite fairytale characters including Snow White, Pinocchio, Goldilocks and Cinderella.
