From October 16 to 20, Told by an Idiot arrives at Liverpool’s Unity Theatre with a new Birmingham Repertory Theatre co-produced play about LSD by playwright Leo Butler.
Leo was invited by former government drugs advisor Professor David Nutt to participate in the world’s first medical trials since the 1960s and this play is the result. All You Need is LSD is a romp that takes on the drug debate, questioning whether we are in need of a psychedelic revolution.
Told by an Idiot has a long and special history with Unity, with the theatre’s original artistic director of 22 years, Graeme Phillips, supporting them since their inception in 1993. Unity has hosted many of the company’s touring productions in the past 25 years, most recently My Perfect Mind in 2015.
The cast features associate Idiot Annie Fitzmaurice, who is from Knotty Ash. Jack Hunter and Sophie Mercell also star, who were introduced to Told by an Idiot through Let Me Play The Lion Too, an improvisational experiment with emerging disabled and non-disabled actors. The cast also includes George Potts, whose credits include Dorian Gray and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
