A south Wales valleys version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and her Children Credit: Farrows Creative / National Theatre Wales

There is only a short time left to submit an entry for the Disability Arts Cymru Inaugural Annual Poetry Competition.

Poet Menna Elfyn will judge the submissions all of which are written in response to the exhibition to their visual art exhibition which remains on view at Celf o Gwmpas, Llandrindod Wells, Powys until 19 May and online.

The deadline for the poetry competition has been extended to 20 May. Three cash prizes will be awarded and selected poems will be part of an e-publication.

Meanwhile at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, now home to the UK’s largest lending collection of plays in English, there are three new Chairs in Drama. Matthew Rhys, Martin Constantine, Pamela Howard and Simon Stephens join Michael Sheen in this scheme which allows students to work closely with leading international artists.

Last month saw Hollywood actor and director Rhys in first official visit working through scenes from his hit series The Americans with acting and musical theatre students from the College; he shared acting techniques for film and television, as well as anecdotes, advice and insights from his career.

The National Theatre Wales' fifth season is underway with a south Wales valleys version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and her Children, performed by a cast of nine women, adapted by Hinterland’s Ed Thomas with music by The Village Social co-creator Dafydd James.

The play is directed by the company's artistic director John McGrath, and plays Merthyr Labour Club until the 22 May.

Coming up at Royal Opera House Stores, Abercwmboi, Aberdare, is a co-production with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, (150)..

Created by Marc Rees and told in English, Welsh and Spanish, it is the story of how 150 men and women left Wales in 1865 and settled in Patagonia.

Directors Mike Pearson and Mike Brookes bring their trademark vision to a multimedia staging of Christopher Logue’s filmic poem, derived from Homer’s account of the last years of the Trojan War, Iliad.

The show, comprised for four episodes which can be seen individually or in all–night or all–day omnibus performances, plays The Ffwrnes, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire from 21 September.

A family show with a twist, The Insatiable, Inflatable Candylion, sees out the year at SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff,with a musical play by writer and poet Patrick Jones about a choir of men and women with dementia Before I Leave closing the season.

Those living in and around Cardiff can look forward to the Hijinx Unity Festival 2015 which takes place from 1 to 5 July as part of Cardiff Festival.

Created by Welsh theatre company Hijinx to give a high profile platform to work made by disabled and non-disabled artists, performers from all over the globe will present events ranging from theatre to circus with trapeze, dance and music.

Taking place across a number of venues, some of the performances are free and for the first time includes a Schools’ Day for year 6 and 7 pupils focussed on inclusive performance, to inspire the next generation about the abilities of people who live with a disability.

Residents of Rhyl have a variety of treats coming up at the Pavilion Theatre including the Agatha Christie Theatre Company's And Then There Were None and Peter Pan for family audiences during half term.

Award-winning Welsh comedian Rod Woodward plays Rhyl as part of his début tour and other visitors include the Bard of Salford John Cooper Clarke, Billy Ocean, X-Factor winner Joe McElderry and the shows Broadway and Beyond, Ladies’ Rock, The Blues Brothers Experience and The Billy Fury Years.

Looking further ahead, David Gest’s (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life Tour! comes to Rhyl for one night in September as does international magician and star of Britain's Got Talent Darcy Oake. Following in his footsteps, Paul Potts, the first ever Britain's Go Talent winner, will be performing in October.
