The world première of Horrible Christmas will be at Derby Theatre next December

Derby Theatre has announced a world première for its festive show next December, Horrible Christmas

Terry Deary, best known for penning the Horrible Histories series, is writing the stage version especially for Derby Theatre.

Birmingham Stage Company, which is currently producing Charlotte’s Web at the Derby venue, will be returning with the new show.

Horrible Christmas will involve a fat, old man sliding down a chimney and stealing presents from under a Christmas tree. By chance a small boy spots the snatcher and sets off to save Christmas, travelling in time through Tudor times back to Herod’s massacre of the innocents and the Dark Ages.

Derby Theatre’s general manager Gary Johnson said, “After the sell-out success of two Horrible Histories stage productions at Derby Theatre earlier this year, we’re extremely excited about this Christmas collaboration with Terry Deary and Birmingham Stage Company.

“We feel honoured to be the venue which will present the world première of Horrible Christmas.

“It’s guaranteed to contain the usual mix of jokes, lashings of gore and a festive-related, spiced-up look at the past, which adults and children alike seem to adore about Terry’s stories.”

Horrible Christmas will run from Friday 6 December 2013 until Saturday 11 January 2014.
