Richard Leighton
Royal Court Theatre Upstairs
(2002)

This five-minute play is the opener of the Royal Court's Young Writers Festival 2002. Richard Leighton is 15 and must consider himself remarkably lucky. To have a play produced at such a prestigious theatre under the direction of Richard Wilson is the ambition of playwrights of all ages.

Steve (Anthony Flanagan) and Michael (Tony Maudsley) are teenage schoolmates. They buck trends nicely as the smaller Steve turns the tables on his inadequate, gently bullying colleague.

This small slice of school life manages to combine mystery with conflict. In a few minutes, Leighton builds tension nicely and one can easily recognise two very familiar types.
