The Fishermen

Nobody could fault Michael Ajao and Valentine Olukoga for the commitment that they give to playing two Nigerian brothers in this adaptation by playwright Gbolahan Obisesan of the first novel from Chigozie Obioma.

The pair of pre-teens are involved in a mythic story set today but possibly based on older folk tales. This involves two more brothers, an absentee father and a madman.

Tragedy is never far off and the symbolic bars dividing the pair speak volumes even before their relevance is explained.

Using physical theatre and story-telling techniques under the direction of Jack McNamara for New Perspectives, the enthusiastic duo relate an atmospheric tale that brings Nigeria to life.
