Tits and Blood

Neil Labute
Greyfriars Kirk House

An hour isn't long for two plays but Neil Labute is such a fine writer that he can tantalise and amuse in no time at all.

Tits and Blood is actually a double bill about illusion and theatre presented by The General's Players, a company of students from the USA.

I Really, Really Like You is close to the monologues in bash : Latter Day Plays. Although a second character intrudes, her lines could as easily have been reported.

Jonny Sturtz plays a charming young man who loves to play with his audience and put doubt into their mind about the existence of theatre's traditional fourth wall and the suspension of disbelief.

He has reeled in a young student, played by Kristin Evans. This is Labuteland and you can be sure that the poor woman will get more than she has bargained for, or will you?

Liars Club is a simple little game in which four actors have worked with the playwright to conjure up stories based on small but significant experiences. They have then swapped and the audience is asked to guess which of the four sordid tales of sex and death is untrue.

This evening has the impressive effect of leaving visitors unsettled and disliking the actors as much as their characters. That is a mark of highly effective writing and good performances all round.
