The Mummers Unconvention

This group, so-called because mummers are the least likely people to join an organized convention, was started five years ago because there was no organization for mumming and Stephen Rowley was asked to do something about it, as he explained after handing over his hobby horse to Brice.

It aims to promote both the practice and the understanding of mumming, which persists or has been revived in many places. There are texts that can be traced back to what John Lydgate described in the 1430s, but they have been changed as they have been passed on through generations so that sometimes people repeat what has become traditional but which is now meaningless gibberish.

The award is made for the International Mummers Festival, which the Unconvention now organizes in Gloucester with a symposium, procession, workshops and mumming performance. The next one takes place on 5-6 December.
